NewsPlus Publisher and Editor-in-Chief, Tony Ekata, has released his first published book, OLD SCHOOL: Recollections of a 70s Student.
ABOUT THE BOOK
In OLD SCHOOL: Recollections of a 70s Student, Tony Ekata deploys his story telling prowess and effortless sense of humour to create, with words and photos, a work of art that is at once historical, didactic, inspiring, and entertaining.
The book has something for anyone who appreciates the mix of innocence, respect, truancy, discipline, diligence and sense of ‘communalism’ of the ‘good old days’, especially amongst boarding students.
OLD SCHOOL serves as an archive for traditional and cultural values and practices, as well as a social commentary on the depreciation of these values by ‘new school’ ethos and norms.
It captures the unfortunate downward drift of educational standards and crumbling school infrastructure with the philanthropic interventions by concerned ‘Old Boys’ to reverse the trend.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Born to the humble family of Odion and Eigbido Ekata of Uromi in Esan North East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria, Anthony Akhabue Ekata is a widely travelled international broadcast and new media journalist. His late illiterate father sent him away from home to boarding school at St. John Bosco’s College Ubiaja despite his limited resources. That wise decision changed the course of his son’s life.
Tony (as he is fondly called) began teaching at the young age of 18 years, obtained professional qualifications in education and taught English Language and Literature for eleven years at several secondary schools in his state before joining Nigeria’s official international radio broadcasting corporation, the Voice of Nigeria (VON) in 1996.
Since then, he has served the corporation in various capacities, including State House Correspondent/Chairman State House Press Corps Presidential Villa (Abuja); and pioneer Bureau Chief of VON Southern Africa Bureau Pretoria, South Africa.
He is also the Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of the independent online news medium, NewsPlus; is a member of the Nigerian Guild of Editors as well as the Professional Editors’ Guild South Africa.
Tony loves watching movies with his adorable wife, Omon Ekata, and his three wonderful children who all feature in this memoir.
The book is available in paperback and Online digital formats, as well as an audio book.
Special thanks to God and to all who contributed directly and indirectly to the fulfillment of this dream to be officially designated as an author, and to those who have been part of my life journey. More elaborate gratitude is expressed in the ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS within the book.
I appreciate too, all those who will be acquiring this treasure (pardon my immodesty) and making it available to others, especially their children, students and wards.
God bless you all.
